Helpful Information

The following information may be of help in using the index. These are but a few of many suggestions that will eventually come and be added with time. As you have user experience with the Index, we invite your further suggestions to make use of the Index easier.

  • Catchy article titles are often replaced or a descriptive phrase added to tell what the article is really about
  • Articles may be occasionally listed under two topics if they could logically fall under both topics, e.g., an article on Metals-Effects could be at that location as well as under a Toxicity or Bioaccumulation topic, depending on the organism of interest
  • Articles of interest may be in multiple locations, e.g., articles on Health Effects may be under Toxicology, Water Supply-Health Effects, Air Pollution-Effects, Metals-Effects, etc.  It is best to narrow interest areas as much as possible, e.g., Health effects of Breathing Asbestos may be under Air  Pollution –Asbestos, or Toxicology
  • Searches may be done only by topic category. Remember to think of the multiple locations that a given topic might be found
  • Can’t find a classification or subject of interest? Look under Miscellaneous Or broader category, e.g., for Leather Tanning Waste Treatment, look under Industrial Wastes-Miscellaneous
  • New topics are incorporated as they evolve ( e.g., Nanotechnology, Natural disaster Effects and Management, Alternative Energy, and Environmental Forensics Emerging Chemicals, Environmental Security, Biotechnology, Life Cycle Assessment, QSARS, etc )
  • Indexed Journals most eminent in their fields, generally speaking, are as follows:

-Air Pollution – AWM, EPg, EPt, EST, JAPCA, PE

-Bioaccumulation, Toxicity, Toxicology – AECT, BECT, EST

-Design – CE, ChE, WEF, JEE, WEM

-Environment – EST, JEE, WET

-Hazardous Wastes – AWM, EPg, HTRWM, EPt, PE

-Industrial Wastes – CEN, ChE, Epg, IWW, PE, EPt, PIWC

-Public Works – ACC, GE, PW, WET, AWWA

-Solid Wastes – ACC, GE, MSWM, PW, WA

-Stormwater – PW, StW, WEM, WET, WPCF

-Water Resources – AWRA, JWRPM, WET

-Water Supply – ACC, AWWA, GE, PW

  • Latin names are replaced with common names where identifiable
  • Overly wordy titles are often shortened where possible without losing meaning
  • In article listings, do not assume articles are in chronological order.  Many are listed as the result of late finds and it is not practical to re-format entries with the large number being handled
  • Do not assume that the better articles are always the most recent ones, or that older articles are obsolete. Many 1970s-era articles remain relevant and are many times clearer, more useful and remain applicable in today’s world
  • Look for historical information under Water & Wastewater and "Miscellaneous" subcategories
  • If a subject for one time period does not appear for a later time period, look under "Miscellaneous" for the broader category, e.g., the IW Photo 8, 9 or 0 does not appear after IW Photo 7, but will be listed under IW-Miscellaneous 8, 9 or 0
